Day 1
7pm. so why am I home so early, since i was not expecting to finish before 8pm?? it's simply because i have an extremely considerate and understanding Registra. I am so grateful to have him as my reg. Even b4 meeting him, i'd been told more than once that he's a great reputation and had done several years of ED previously (which means that he'll have a pretty solid medical background). And he is indeed a terrific reg to have. At 5pm, when i was still tossing out whose discharge summary to do first, he came up and said that they could all wait till tmrw and spoke to the nurse about that (which was very important cos otherwise i'd be in deep trouble when the nurses find out tmrw that i haven't completed them). He even gave me a big thumbs up when i managed to put in an IVC (after my 2nd attempt!)So i've got 4 discharge summaries and a few consults leftover from today for tmrw. Definitely not ideal but, i just had too much to do.
Basically, what i said about my team being super busy is not an exaggeration. I was working none-stop today, answering pages, calling people, charting medications, moving from ward/department to ward/department, running down the corridors when no one was looking, skipping lunch while the other interns had time for lunch. Should be better tmrw, cos today I was left alone to do everything while my regs were in theatre or their own orientation.
have to say the nurses were pretty nice too. was greeted by a chocolate bar (and a lists of things to do and a note to remind me to communicate well with the nurses) at Pre-admission today. Thankfully, the nurses also know more than we know when it comes to charting medications. "Is 8o eight times a day?" "No, it's every 8 hours." (but don't blame me for not knowing this one. it's not an approved abbreviation anyway.
Today's highlight:
successfully teaching my consultant/supervisor how to use 2 computer programs (to view radiology) when i'd NOT used either previously.
********************

got a beautiful, brandnew pager this time. i am quite smitten. could't stop looking at it (well, until today when i just didn't have any time for it). think i can keep this one for the whole year! hope that's the case!
I've made a deal with it. it is not to give me any trouble. ie not allowed to go off too frequently (esp at the worse times, eg when i'm putting in an intravenous cannular, or 5 min before i decide to go home). And in return, i will treat it nicely. eg not slamming it into the doorpost and breaking its window, like i did once to one of its ancestors,
or dropping it into the toilet in one of my rushed toilet breakes (no, that hasn't happned yet.)
