Pinnaotomy
Today, Zhinger, an x year old woman, with no significant medical history, underwent a pinnaotomy. This was performed without local anaesthetia and after simple sterilisation of the surgical field. The entire procedure took about 5 minutes (most of the time was spent choosing and marking the most ideal site for the incision). Post-operatively, the patient is afebrile and not complaining of any pain. The patient has been instructed to use an antiseptic spray bd for 6 weeks and to seek medical attention if there are signs of infection. No follow-up is required. The patient's mother raised a concern after the procedure. The Chinese people believe that there are several significant acupuncture points on the auricle, especially the helix and the pinna. Therefore, the mother believes that there's a great possibility that an important point may be disturbed, stimulated or destroyed!!! as a result of the procedure. But, the patient herself, trained under western medicine and has little belief in Chinese medicine, dismissed this concern. However, it will be of medical interest for the patient to be under close observation by those she comes into contact. Any unexplained change in behaviour should be reported and appropriate medical attention should then be sought.
