Dischargin my anger
i've never enjoyed work as little as i do now. alright, i'm talking about hospital work only and i've only done 9 months of it. but despite the general public recentment for work, "Mondayitis" and etc. i'd been happy with my job and this new phase in my life, until i started this Geriatrics term. And after only 3 weeks of it, i'm already counting down the days to my next term.the turn over of patients on my team's is faster than pancakes on a saucepan. an average of 4 in and 4 out everyday. what's wrong with that? well, we need to prepare this 2-3 page Discharge Summary for each patient before they go and these typed Discharge Summaries get randomly picked to be critiqued at a meeting every week. all good interns know that you should start preparing the DS the minute the patient gets admitted, but with the rate i'm admitting and discharging patients, i'm forever doing last minute DSs. one night, i was up on the wards doing DSs (for the 7 discharges next day) until 10:30pm and tomorrow morning i'm planning to get there 2.5 hours early to prepare Monday's DS.
this is only happening to my team. i don't have the luxury that my fellow Geri interns have of going down with their registras to assess new patients and perhaps learn something. I only find out that i have new patients when the nurses page me to chart fluids or resite cannulas on patients that get admitted under my consultant during the day without me knowing. Mr who?? could you spell that please? are you sure you are not paging the wrong intern?
Call me a nerd. but the only thing i look forward to during the week at the work are the Grand Rounds. and no, it's not the food.
term 1 was crazily busy too. but i was happily busy. now i've started to despise it all. is it this the 9-month itch? or what?

In happier news, i've got a job for next year, at the same hospital. but still went thru a nervous few days for some of my colleges because of the utterly random selection process. now most of us have a job next year.
