there're, in sydney's Chinese community, a number of singing enthusiasts. there're at least 3 choirs (non-church choirs) which meet and practise quite diligiently on a weekly basis. My mum joined one bout 2 yr ago and since then my parents' social life have changed dramatically.
Last night, i went to a concert held by my mum's choir. the venue hired was actually CCC at Milson's pt. And i must say they were quite good, esp the solos. I was a little disappointed by the performance by the bass. His voice wasn't bad but just lacked the "it" factor that makes me melt. But the mezzo-saprano's voice was like silver! really strong and projects very well, could hear her from the end of the hall with no mic. i actually took a lesson from her bout 1/2 yr ago. all i learnt was to open up more, at the back of my mouth. um. easier said than done. anyway, i didn't go back.
The highlights for me were, Seguidilla from Carmen and Mozart's Voi Che Sapete (from La Nozze di Figaro) [for those of u that know P&P, it's the song that Lizzy sings while playing the piano at Pemberley, ie the "starring" scene! you know!]

I'm finding it hard to sing church songs. most of them r just too high and too quick for me. i mean i can sing high. i am a soprano. but i just can't sing most of the songs we sing at church comfortably. they're too "throat-y". my throat has to tense up to sing them, and that's something i'm told i shouldn't do. So at the end of a couple of songs, my throat's all tired and clogged. and when i sing those songs at home, my mum says i sound very sqeaky. Oh well, anyway, so far pple haven't complained and so long i am doing more good then bad at singspiration then i will just keep doing the same thing. hopefully it isn't actually bad for my voice, like give me vocal cord nodules or something like that.
