so far...
ED work's been very challenging. still feeling incompetent a lot of the time. there're good days (when i discharge 4 patients in 2 hours) and bad days (when i see only 4 patients over an entire shift).the good thing is that i am learning heaps, usually from my little mistakes. MISTAKES!?!?! Doctors making MISTAKES at the EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT?!?! Shock! Horror! yeah, well. i nearly 100% of my mistakes are picked up within 1/2hr's time because i would've asked a senior about them cos i'm unsure about them. and they are usually not a matter of life & death.
so i am constantly learning. one of my senior's tone is totally condescending. so much so that i nearly cracked up laughing the first time he criticized me. but i think because each encounter with him is so amusing that i can actually remember what i can learn from him each time. I don't mind being humiliated.
what i do hate about working where i am at the moment is that because it's a small hospital it doesn't have 40% of what's available in a tertiary (big) hospital. So i spend a lot of my energy and time over the phone, begging people at other hospitals or consultants to accept my patients under their care. The patients have to be sick enough for them to be admitted but not so unstable that they'd crash on route to the other hospitals. Another problem is that often the patient's treated like a soccer ball. they get kicked around because no one wants to accept them. The surgeons don't think there's anything they can fix, the gynaecologists don't think it's a gynae problem, but they are elderly and sick so can the medical team admit them?? Arhhh!!!
